Today was the first
whale watch trip of the season with cold temperatures, but crystal clear and
calm seas. We traveled into Cape Cod Bay, through Race Point and toward the
Peaked Hill buoy before we found a whale. Initially, the whale was making 22-24
minute dives! However, as always, patience paid off when the humpback whale
turned out to be Putter, the 1993 calf of Mars!
He came over and, not only swam under the boat, but blew several
bubble streams. While bubble clouds are often used by humpbacks as a way
to corral fish, we also believe bubbles are sometimes used as a display, or a
way to communicate. We were also fortunate to see several gannets and
loons, as well as a harbor seal. A great trip for ther first day of the
season.
June 14, 2005 Whales are few and far
between around Stellwagen but there have been some recent sightings east of the
bank and some east of Cape Cod. Whales that have been seen include: Liner,
Nile, Scylla and calf, Glostick (Scylla's 1997 calf), Division (Orbit's 1991
calf), Putter (Mars's 1993 calf), Brine (Salt's 1987 calf), and Apostrophe
(Nurse's 1985 calf). Red tide is still an issue here as well. |
