It was a beautiful
day to be out on the water off Massachusetts. We had brief looks
at two very elusive minkes, both of which managed to disappear on
us.
However,
just as we were about to give up, a whale watch boat from Provincetown
called to say they had a "big whale"- we went over to
check it out and, much to our surprise it was not only a big whale,
it was a humpback whale, and not just any humpback- it was Sirius!
This was our first look at him this year. He was all alone and
heading out of Cape Cod Bay to the east. Perhaps he checked out
the Bay, didn't find much too eat and decided to move on. He looked
good and, while he still has his old entanglement scars, he doesn't
show any signs of new problems.
Here are
photos from yesterday's trip. If you look closely, you can see
the indented scar on the top and the white scarring around Sirius'
tail stock from a previous entanglement. Those have been there
for a while and have healed nicely. He's lucky he got "away".
