The whale season “officially” begins in the Gulf of Maine when we see SALT each year.  2007 was no exception and the first sighting of this much-loved whale was on April 22nd.  SALT was seen throughout the season on May 28th, July 15th, 18th, 28th and with CARDHU on August 20th.

We’re wondering if SALT might return with a little one next year as she spent an awful lot of time with her whale BFF (Best Friend Forever) CARDHU.  It seems that whenever either whale is pregnant, they like to hang out!  We will keep our fingers crossed that this is the case and look forward to finding out next season.

SALT has such a big family now it’s almost a guarantee to see some of them each season and 2007 was no disappointment.  Her calves, CRYSTAL, BRINE, and MOSTAZA were all sighted as well as her grandcalf ETCH-A-SKETCH.  CRYSTAL was seen a number of times in spring 2007 including once in June by Captain John Boats, where he was all by himself East of Cape Cod.
